The Locust was developed specifically in order to support US paratroop operations. With 25mm of frontal armour it was a very light tank which was essential to facilitate transportation and mounted a 37mm gun. Various issues meant that the US did not utilise the Locust in combat operations, but the British did.
In October, 1944, 6th Airborne Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment was reorganised and replaced its Tetrarchs with Locusts. A number were deployed in Operation Varsity but only four of the eight tanks actually reached the rendezvous point. One was knocked en route after assisting US paratroopers pinned down by a German anti-tank gun.
