Susan "La Miss" Traverse was the only woman to ever officially serve in the French Foreign Legion.
Susan Travers was a British woman who joined the French armed forces during World War II. She initially served as a nurse and ambulance driver in the Red Cross before joining the Free French Legion. Travers was a talented driver and became the personal chauffeur of General Marie-Pierre Kœnig. She participated in the Battle of Bir Hakeim, where she distinguished herself for her bravery and dedication to the wounded. Travers was awarded numerous decorations, including the Croix de Guerre and the Médaille Militaire.
