The 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division arrived in France in June, 1940 and experienced heavy fighting during the retreat to Dunkirk and the counter-attack at Arras. It served as part of the Eighth Army in North Africa and Sicily before its withdrawal in October, 1943. The division spearheaded the attack on Gold Beach and advanced 10km into France, linking up with Canadian troops from Juno Beach. It fought in Europe until December, 1944, notably during Market-Garden.
